Each spring, when the shadbush blooms, the Connecticut River comes alive with the annual migration of American Shad, Sea Lamprey, and other anadromous fish. Guided by instinct and evolutionary drive, these adult fish journey upstream to spawn in the rivers where they were born.

The Robert E. Barrett Fishway, located at HG&E’s Holyoke dam, plays a vital role in supporting this migration. It was the first and remains one of the most successful fish lifts on the Atlantic coast. The Fishway operates using two elevators, or “lifts,” that transport migrating fish over the dam, where they then continue their upstream journey to their natal spawning grounds.

The visitor center at the Robert E. Barrett fishway provides a unique experience, allowing visitors to watch fish make their journey upstream through our underwater viewing windows.
